Aimé Césaire (1913-2008) Martinique
Aimé Césaire was a Martinican poet and politician. He is one of the founders of the literary movement of negritude and a steadfast anti-colonialist. Aimé Césaire’s uncompromising character earned him the nickname “fundamental negro” and he inspired many authors including Franz Fanon and André Breton. A temper that poorly masks the dismay of losing part of his history. Sensing Africa deeply within him, he used to say that there is a memory beyond memory.
