Maya Angelou is an activist, poet, novelist, actress, director and teacher born April 4, 1928 in Saint-Louis and died May 28, 2014 in Winston-Salem. All her life, she will not stop defending the place of blacks and women in American society. She is the one who made a strong, singular and literary voice heard to account for the life of a black woman in segregationist America through seven autobiographical books and poetry. The bestseller I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, published in 1970, is the first volume of her memoir written under the guidance of James Baldwin.
