Tribute to Salvador Allende – Symbol of the "Chilean path to socialism"
Share
September 11th is a memorable date. On that day in 1973, Salvador Allende, the first democratically elected president with a socialist platform, was overthrown in a coup orchestrated with U.S. support. Allende held the dream of the "Chilean Road to Socialism," focused on the redistribution of wealth and the nationalization of resources, including copper. His program aroused fierce opposition from the Nixon government, which was concerned about this socialist model in Latin America.
In his final speech, as La Moneda, the presidential palace, was being bombed, Allende affirmed his confidence in the future. He believed that the seeds of conscience sown in the hearts of the Chilean people would survive the violence. Fifty years later, in May 2021, the Chilean people voted for radical reform, marking a significant victory against neoliberalism.
