THE MARTYR OF INDEPENDENCE
PATRICE EMERY LUMUMBA 1925-1961 DRC
The first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Patrice Émery Lumumba, was one of the key figures behind the independence of the Belgian Congo. On June 30, 1960, during the independence proclamation ceremony, Lumumba greeted the victorious people and reminded the King of the Belgians, Baudouin, that the Congolese would never forget their fate under colonial rule. On January 17, 1961, Patrice Émery Lumumba, considered by the Congolese as the first post-independence national hero, was shot after being tortured by the Belgians and Katangese officials.
