THE POET FIGHTER FOR CIVIL RIGHTS
MAYA ANGELOU (1928-2014) - UNITED STATES
Maya Angelou is an activist, poet, novelist, actress, director, and teacher. A victim of violence and trauma in her childhood, literature helped her find the strength to speak out. A key figure in African-American cultural life, she also spent time in Ghana, where she hosted Malcolm X. Involved in the civil rights movement, she brought a strong, singular, and literary voice to bear, chronicling the life of a Black woman in segregated America through seven autobiographical books and poetry. The bestseller I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, published in 1970, is the first volume of her memoirs, written under the guidance of James Baldwin. Included in the school curriculum, Maya Angelou's work is emblematic of a continuing fight for equality, justice, and respect.
