Tribute to Salvador Allende – A Symbol of the "Chilean Path to Socialism"
September 11 is a memorable date. In 1973, on this day, Salvador Allende, the first democratically elected president with a socialist agenda, was overthrown in a coup d'état orchestrated with the support of the United States. Allende carried the dream of the "Chilean path to socialism," focused on wealth redistribution and the nationalization of resources, including copper. His program faced fierce opposition from Nixon's administration, concerned about a socialist model emerging in Latin America.
In his final speech, as La Moneda, the presidential palace, was being bombed, Allende expressed his confidence in the future. He believed that the seeds of consciousness planted in the hearts of the Chilean people would outlast the violence. Fifty years later, in May 2021, the Chilean people voted for radical reform, marking a significant victory against neoliberalism.
