THE THEORIST OF PAN-AFRICANISM AND AFRICAN INDEPENDENCE

KWAME NKRUMAH 1909-1972 GHANA

Kwame Nkrumah, born in 1909 in Nkroful (Ghana), is a prominent figure in the struggle for independence and Pan-Africanism. Educated in the United States, he was influenced by Marxist writings and Pan-African ideas. In 1947, he joined the independence movement in the Gold Coast and founded the Convention People's Party (CPP) in 1949, rallying the population with the slogan "Independence Now!" Thanks to his perseverance, Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve independence in 1957, with Nkrumah as its president. He advocated for African unity, playing a key role in founding the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963. His writings, such as “Africa Must Unite,” called for a unified Africa free from neocolonialism. Overthrown in 1966 in a coup d'état, he continued his fight in exile in Guinea. Nkrumah passed away in 1972, remaining an enduring symbol of anti-colonial resistance and the vision of a united, independent Africa.
